Note from Mrs. Nolan
Dear Vining families,
There has been a recent increase in illnesses including strep throat, GI bug, and confirmed cases of strains A and B influenza ("the flu") in both the school and wider community. It is important to take measures to keep your family healthy and to try to keep these illnesses from spreading to others. The following information is a good guideline to follow for deciding of when to keep your child home from school.
** Students must be symptom free for 24 hours, without the use of medication,(such as Tylenol or Motrin) before returning to school. Please do not give the child a fever reducing medicine and send them to school if they are still sick, as they are still contagious and able to infect others. If your child becomes ill at school, and the school nurse feel the child is too sick to benefit from school or is contagious to other children, you will be called to come and
take him/her home. Please be sure that arrangements can be made to transport your
child home from school, and that childcare is available in case of illness. If your daytime
or emergency phone number changes during the year, please notify the main office
immediately so we can update your emergency contact forms.
You can help to protect your family from illness and the flu by:
The following is some info from the CDC website about how the flu spreads:
Person to Person
“People with flu can spread it to others up to about 6 feet away. Most experts think that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Less often, a person might get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.
When Flu Spreads
People with flu are most contagious in the first three to four days after their illness begins. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Children and some people with weakened immune systems may pass the virus for longer than 7 days.
Symptoms can begin about 2 days (but can range from 1 to 4 days) after the virus enters the body. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Some people can be infected with the flu virus but have no symptoms. During this time, those people may still spread the virus to others.”
Please let me know if you have any questions about whether your child is well enough to return after an illness, or contact your pediatrician for guidance.

It is important to take measures to keep your family healthy and to try to keep these illnesses from spreading to others. - Temperature of 100 degrees or greater in the past 24 hours*
- Vomiting in the past 24 hours*
- Diarrhea in the past 24 hours*
- Strep Throat (must have been taking an antibiotic for at least 24 hours before returning to school) or other infection requiring antibiotics, such as conjunctivitis or “pink eye”
- Bad cold, with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night .
** Students must be symptom free for 24 hours, without the use of medication,(such as Tylenol or Motrin) before returning to school. You can help to protect your family from illness and the flu by:
- Teaching your children to wash their hands often with soap and water, and to use hand sanitizer when soap/water is not available. Avoid touching the face if possible as the virus can enter through the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and mouth. This is one of the best things you can do!
- Teaching your child to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues and throwing them away immediately, or to cover with their elbow when tissues are not available.
- Getting the flu shot for you and your family and keeping sick children and family members home while they are ill.
