Allergen Aware
Please take note that Vining is an allergen aware school. Children with life-threatening allergies can have a reaction with the smallest exposure to an allergen. If your child shares his/her classroom with a student with an allergy, we ask that you take care when packing snacks for your child that are eaten in the classroom. Please refrain from packing snacks with peanuts or tree nuts. If you do pack a snack containing these allergens, your child may eat that snack during lunch and then wash their hands prior to re-entering the classroom.
ALICE Drill
On Wednesday, October 10th, the Vining School will participate in our first ALICE Drill of the year. This safety drill is completed with cooperation from both the Billerica Police and Fire Department. We ask that, if you need to dismiss your child, do so before 9:30am or after 11:00am. We are scheduled to run two separate drills during this time frame.
At the Vining, we prepare our students by explaining the drill is similar to a fire drill, and share the book I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared. Our classroom teachers discuss the differences and the importance of knowing what to do in case of an emergency. Please contact Mrs. Gibelli if you have any questions.
BSAP Forum
On Wednesday, October 17th at 5:30pm, the Billerica Substance Abuse Prevention Committee is presenting a forum on substance abuse prevention. Topics will include: No First Time by The Evan G Foundation and Winchester Hospital's Steve Woods on vaping and other current drug trends.
Boston Cares and Shire
The Vining School would like to thank both Boston Cares and Shire Pharmaceuticals for all of the work they completed on Friday. Please ask your child about how great all of the new additions look. The best quote from the STEM fair... "Mrs. Gibelli, that was really fun and we learned something!"
We are coordinating with Boston Cares to have them return in the spring for a whole school STEM event.
Cafeteria Aides
Please let Mrs. Gibelli know if you would be interested in working as a Cafe Aide. We currently have two open positions.
Library Book Swap
On Tuesday, students in rooms 6, 4, 9, 13, 17, and 18 will be given time to swap their library books. Please remember to have your child return their loaned book on this day.
Students in rooms 3, 7, 11, 15, and 17 will swap books on October 16.
MCAS Dates
Hard to believe but we are already scheduling for MCAS. If you have a student in grade three, four, or five they are scheduled to participate in MCAS. The tests have been scheduled for April and May and will each have two sessions. If you are looking to schedule a family vacation, we ask that you arrange around these dates. Thank You in advance.

Shining Star Blog
Does your child love to write? Or does your child struggle with writing and could use some extra practice? Then consider allowing them to attend the Shining Star meeting this Friday after school, sponsored by the Vining PTO!
Your child will get the opportunity to write about a topic that is important to them, using a chromebook and our blog site. The article that they write can vary in length from one paragraph to multiple pages. The participating student will learn what is involved with blogging, practice writing, and socialize with friends. All articles are posted on the Shining Star Blog site. Snacks are provided. Let Liz know if your child has an allergy.
Questions? Email Liz at lmcgrory20@gmail.com. Shining Star is run by Liz McGrory and Todd Baldwin.
Turkey Trot
Registration papers were emailed on Friday for the annual Billerica Partners for Education Turkey Trot, scheduled for Sunday, November 18. If you are available, please consider joining us for this fun, family-oriented community event. It would be great if the Vining could take home the participation trophy one last time. Hopefully the weather will cooperate more than last year's event.
