Letter from Nurse Nolan
Springtime greetings from the Health Office!!  It finally feels like spring, or maybe even summer, but with the change of seasons I always like to send  a little reminder of things you can do to make your students more comfortable at school and in their classrooms learning, instead of visiting the nurse.
If your child has seasonal allergies, make sure they take their medications at home to keep symptoms in check.  If they need any medication at school for their seasonal allergies, remember that I will need a doctor’s order, even if the medication is an “over the counter” one.  Keeping well hydrated, showering at night, using a saline nose spray and also wearing sunglasses can help limit the exposure to pollen.  Pollen counts are usually the highest between 5am-10am so if your child in sensitive to pollen, experts advise staying indoors if possible during those hours.
It’s also time to get out the bug spray, sunscreen, and hats!  I see many students during the day for itchy mosquito bites.  It is a good idea to check your child for ticks daily if they play outside or if you have pets that could bring them into your home.  Also teach your child what poison ivy looks like and to avoid it.  “Leaves of three, let it be” is a good mantra for kids to remember!   Make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather and for play. Although flip-flops are allowed, they are not Mrs. Nolan’s favorite footwear for active kids.  Each year I have many scrapes on tops of toes and bottoms of feet  and a couple of sprained ankles from the foot not being protected.  I have also had to become somewhat of a flip-flop repair nurse on occasion too…(thank goodness for masking tape!!!)
Students entering the third and sixth grade next year will need to have an updated physical on file with the school they attend.  These must have been done within a year of the start of the 18-19 school year (September 1,2017 or later).  If you are visiting your pediatrician over the summer, make sure to get a copy of your child’s physical.
All medications must be picked up by the last day of school and all medication orders and care plans need to be renewed at the start of each school year.  You can ask your pediatrician to fill out their own forms, or download the medication authorization forms off  the health page on the Billerica Schools website (billericak12.com).
Thank you and as always, please feel free to contact me if there are any questions or concerns about your child’s health and wellness.
